Exhibition at Balaton Plaza Gallery

Projection of emotions
Written by journalist Eszter Ódor

An exhibition entitled “Dead End” opened recently in Balaton Plaza Gallery. Laszlo Szigeti’s paintings can be viewed by the visitors until 9th Dec.
In the opening speech, Zoltan Debreczeny said he leaves the evaluation up to the viewer. He said Laszlo Szigeti’s paintings will “travel” to another exhibition which indicates there is a demand for them because they are kind for people.

As it was revealed from the email conversations with Laszlo Szigeti, these pictures are the projections of his emotions and they speak to those who are touched by them. He lived in England for five years, from where he brought home many artistic impulses.

As a technical person he is perfectionist and meticulous, only in his paintings can be discovered a sort of deliberate mess and asymmetry.

Exhibition at Szivacs Gallery

Presented by journalist Zsolt Nyulasi at the opening event of the “Return” exhibition in Szechenyi High School, Dunaujvaros, Hungary. 11th Nov 2011.

Return – but where?

"Dear guests, dear Ladies and Gentlemen!

Let me begin with an honest confession: before the common, kind request of the Szechenyi High School and the Szivacs Gallery, I’ve never even heard the name of the artist, who is presenting right now. This will become important later on, but here's a brief tutorial before I move on to the point.

Dandelions at rise of day

Despite the fact that he began to paint as an adult, Laszlo Szigeti is a stunningly, impertinently, or you could say unabashedly young man. Not trained artist - if there is such word like trained and, if there is such like artist - but he is proud to acquire important technical tricks from paintress Barbara Kovats at the Drawing School of Buda. I would quickly note here, that I have never seen such a young man so accurately stretching, basing, preparing the canvas - Laszlo Szigeti is a thorough and humble painter, please remember this well, he respects the material above all. Let me have a cautious prediction: the professional establishment, dedication could be very handy in the future. Another important momentum - I mean important to me and momentum to me - that Laszlo Szigeti is an artist from Dunaujvaros: he studied here, he was grown up here, he even started his higher education here, though by his own admission that year and a half on the metallurgical engineer course was rather suffering than eminent and remarkable study – at that time there were no trace of artistic strings, he simply left the whole thing. And did not stop until England.

Lucky man

England is an important station, I have a lurking suspicion that one meaning, direction and purpose of the title of the exhibition is England. But I would still not turn to the point, only note here, that in England, he got enough inspiration to extract his artistic talent. For ten years, he paints, he works stubbornly with the canvas, acrylic, oil and brush. Ten years of struggle - as witnessed by his paintings, in my  gentle and humble view, mostly with himself.
Laszlo Szigeti is diverse and so are his paintings: multifarious, multifaceted, has many view points. Once bold and rousing. Another time moderate. Than colourful cavalcade, that almost on a kitschy way reflects the paintings of the past century, which were wild, expressieve, self-freeing, sensually and rampantly pleasing. Decorative and stunning, youthful and unvarnished. Then there are programpoem-like works, which are scorable like a piece of music, rhymable contents, familiar forms and shapes, varicoloured, exciting, unexpected, what is more, sometimes even surreal rioting. And my favorites, the abstract visions, which are tempting us always to new ways, flashing up new possibilities, holding out new solutions- in these works László Szigeti, - we shall name him by now, Laci Szigeti- the result of his self-suggestive trainings gain their shape and form. Some are hidden in landscape, some packed in a portrait, but still, again and again, always flashes up the big question-pair: what does the material know and what can I do with the material?

Back to the great stories

Laci Szigeti is fretting the stairs of experimentation and trial - a lucky man, because of this. He returns where he always wished to, to the quiet pleasure of creating or to the electrifying extasy of it - back, back to childhood. Laying on a field, staring at a dandelion at the rise of day, bend close to the world, to examine, to walk around, explore, see what can be seen, sometimes also what can not be seen.
We arrived, dear guests, here is the point: the “Return” is not only a title, but the main motive of the exhibition. With a minimum of two, but rather three meanings. One is of course the already mentioned local momentum: Laszlo Szigeti returns now to Dunaujvaros with a separate exhibition for the first time. The second meaning, and also a possible option: England, again. The English name of the exhibition, the recorded and signed works in English clearly show the intention and the direction the great secret of the future, whether he succeeds to turn his ambitious plans a reality. And finally the third interpretation, which is the most important and telling for me, which involves most of the major issues and opens new horizons in understanding– the result and the purpose of the previously indicated spiritual program or self-suggestive training. It can be written down like this: I return as an artist to the great themes, to the great histories of the world, to the Genesis, the biblical motifs, to the nature, the jazz, to women. I'm building a world - for myself, knowing that the world is as I see it, I get to know it better, try to define it. Even if I have not found it, but I am looking for and researching the model, method and program, a kind of “nota bene” style, through which the world is mine: I can understand it, grasp it, it can be described with my contribution.

Return – to myself. I jitter and frankly hope he succeeds - please have a look at the pictures of the “Return”!
Thank you for your attention!"
